Crime data is only available through December 2016. Improvements in public safety have been made over the
past 16 years, which resulted in a steady decrease in the City’s overall crime rate. But in 2017, in keeping with
national trends, the City experienced increased shootings, homicides, and opioid overdoses, which has led to
an increased focus on the nature and fairness of police interactions with citizens.
These trends do not take away from the improvements in public safety that have been made, but they are
current conditions that need to be addressed.
